Atelier Jorn Frequently Asked Questions
-
It is a slow partnership between human hands and the quiet history of the earth. Working with solid hardwood is an art form in itself, requiring a countless cadence of steps and absolute patience to transform a raw tree into a lasting heirloom. It begins with careful milling and a years long drying process to coax the living fibers into a stable, furniture grade equilibrium.
Only then can the sculpting begin. Through precise cutting, planing, and hours of hand sanding, we do not force our will upon the timber; we listen to it. We celebrate the inherent details that make each tree unique, transforming dramatic grain flows, knots, and natural lines into structural art. When we seamlessly join these boards together, we are locking a piece of the natural world into a clean, minimalist form designed to grace your space and live alongside you for generations.

We work exclusively with premium, sustainably sourced solid American hardwoods. Our signature pieces primarily feature Walnut, White Oak, and Red Oak. We select each slab to highlight natural grain flow, structural honesty, and material authenticity.
-
No. At Atelier Jorn, we embrace the natural character of real wood. Natural variations including unique grain patterns, knots, burls, and minor hairline cracks are inherent characteristics of solid timber, not defects. These elements tell the story of the tree and ensure your custom piece is entirely one of a kind.
-
We offer both. Alongside our fully bespoke custom fabrication services, we have a curated production line of furniture. This line is designed to suit a versatile range of spaces while maintaining our strict artisanal standards and organic modern minimalist aesthetic.

The Case Study Secrétaire is one of our signature designs. It is a wall mounted, solid wood secretary desk engineered to serve as a fully functional, highly concealed home office. It offers a compact, minimalist footprint that seamlessly blends into residential spaces when not in use.

A live edge table incorporates the natural, organic perimeter of the tree trunk into the design of the tabletop rather than cutting it into clean, straight lines. We carefully debark and hand sand these living edges to preserve the unique contours, ridges, and historical shape of the original tree, creating a striking contrast with the clean, minimalist geometry of the furniture base.scription

An epoxy river table is a custom design that places two live edge wood slabs opposite one another, leaving a gap down the center that mirrors the winding path of a natural river. This central gap is then filled with a specialized, highly durable liquid resin that cures into a solid, glass like finish, seamlessly locking the two organic timber edges together into a single, cohesive surface

Yes, we ship our furniture nationwide and internationally from our New York City studio. Because solid hardwood pieces are exceptionally heavy and delicate, domestic shipments are handled by specialized white glove freight carriers. This service includes bringing the piece into your space, unpacking it, and completing any necessary on site assembly. For international orders, we coordinate dedicated crate shipping and handle all export logistics to ensure your piece arrives safely at your destination anywhere in the world.

We encourage you to truly live with and enjoy your hard earned furniture. Because your piece is crafted from genuine solid American hardwood, it possesses a remarkable resilience. Every minor dent, every subtle scratch is simply a marker of time, a story of a move across town, a lively dinner party, or what life brought your way. To keep the wood healthy and aging beautifully through daily life, we recommend routine cleaning by wiping surfaces down with a soft, dry, or slightly damp microfiber cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ammonia, or silicone based polishes. Additionally, keep your furniture away from direct, prolonged exposure to intense heat sources like radiators or severe moisture to maintain the wood natural equilibrium. Unlike veneered or mass produced furniture, solid hardwood is inherently renewable. If the stories your piece gathers over the decades ever become too many, or if you simply wish to restore it to its original, day one appearance, it can always be professionally sanded down and refinished to a brand new condition. That is the lifelong promise of authentic wood craftsmanship.
